Hi everybody

This is my first swap and I'm very excited about it. I've already began gathering some goodies and did a "test drive" on the Monkey Socks pattern as I've never knitted that one before.
I have a question. My heel flap turned out much longer than necessary. At first I thought it was because I have small, skinny feet; so I asked my husband to try it on, and the heel is really too long. Does anyone else have the same problem? I'm seriously thinking of doing the socks with a short row heel...

The heel flap is about 3" long on the Monkeys that I have. How long is yours?

Last time I knit the Monkeys, I used a different heel flap than the pattern calls for. - S1, K1, S1, K1, etc....; S1, Purl across. Do what works best for you. Have fun!

Hi, I was worried about mine too, i thought it looked too long, but on examining the photo on the pattern it is quite long, i have followed the pattern so it must be right.

Dotty, mine are almost 4 1/2...
Arctic knitter, I was thinking about doing that. Looking at the pics on the Knitty website, it seems that is what she used also.
Martina, I did follow the pattern.

Thanks for the input, everybody :D

The best length for a heel flap is to the middle of your ankle bone. I know that my ankle bone is 3" from the floor, so Cookie's heel flaps are the only ones that actually fit right out of all the socks I've knit. You can always make the flap smaller and just not have as many decrease rows in your gusset. I make all my heel flaps longer than they usually call for, and just increase the number of decreases.
