Question on Yarn Weight and Monkeys

I need your honest opinion...these are my first Monkey Socks, and they're in Lorna's Laces (Purple Iris) in a sportweight...is this yarn too bulky for this pattern for my secret pal? Is it OK to use sportweight, or should I use a fingering? The gauge for the recipient is good, but if I should use a finer yarn, I will. My secret pal deserves my best! So please give this newbie Monkey Sock knitter your advice. P.S. Isn't this a fun pattern to knit? I love it!
Addendum on 3/27: Thanks for the advice, and I'll keep knitting these in the sportweight!

I too am using a sport weight, I love the feel of it...my pal will too I believe. If I have the time I may make a second pair in a lighter weight, we shall see, but the sport weight is really lovely. Nice job by the way

Your socks look great. :~)
I don't see where sports weight would be a problem unless the foot the socks were being made for was a small foot.

Those colors are stunning! I don't see why you can't use a sports weight yarn, especially since you said the gauge is fine. Your pal is one lucky woman!
