Knitting and swapping Monkey Socks with Monkey Pals for the FOURTH time.

I think they look just as good :-)
I think I prefer monkeys with the purl sts. The ones without purling look flat somehow.
I like the purl stitches, but I use the Eye of Partridge heel and have knitted a couple of pairs with a slip stich toe which really looks great on a varigated or self striping yarn.

I like the purl stitches, too! But I've been modifying with a picot cuff and slip-stitch heel!
Personally, I don't see what the big deal about purling is. It's just the reverse side of the knit stitch, and if you get right down to it, there is only one stitch in knitting. Everything else is a variation on it. By purling, you give an object depth. You can't get any real depth or true stitch definition by not doing some purling.
I say, get over it. There's nothing difficult about it. I'm not a speed freak when it comes to knitting. I'd much rather go for quality. Those people who don't like to purl because it slows them down probably shouldn't be knitting socks. They should stick to large, flat surfaces where they can tear it up. As I tell my students, have some pride in what you do. It's not how fast you can make something, but how well you do it. Throw away the chunky yarn, the size 17 tree trunks, and use something finer, something that you will be proud of. I just don't understand the rage for churning things out fast and doing it the easy way. You're a person, not a machine. Put your heart and soul into what you make. Your garments will be the better for it.
I like the original pattern better :)
I'm the last "here" link and I totally purled on my socks. :D
Not sure what looks different about them, because I followed the pattern exactly.
